Description
Air War sends you straight into the heart of a 1945-style aerial conflict where the Second World War may be over on paper, but a brand-new battle has erupted in the skies. Enemy forces, some flying classic military aircraft and others piloting strange alien spaceships, are pushing to conquer your lands, and your fighter jet is the only thing standing in their way.
The game is a vertical-scrolling shooter in the proud tradition of retro arcade flight games. Steer your plane with the arrow keys or by dragging on a touchscreen, weaving through incoming fire while your guns and missiles blaze away at anything ahead of you. Knocking out enemies keeps the sky clear, and surviving long enough carries you through multiple missions packed with targets.
Difficulty escalates in a satisfying way. The deeper you fly into the war, the more crowded the sky becomes with gunfire smoke, missile trails, and enemies that fight back with special abilities. Some hostiles shoot at a higher rate than you do, while others maneuver faster than your guns can track, forcing you to pick your engagements carefully and keep moving at all times.
A few survival rules go a long way up there. Stay near the bottom of the screen to give yourself maximum reaction time against incoming bullets, and make small constant movements rather than sitting still, since stationary planes are easy targets. Focus your fire on the most dangerous enemies first, especially the fast shooters, and grab different planes when the game lets you pilot new ones, because a fresh aircraft can change how a mission plays out.
